An Atlantic City man who allegedly snuck into City Hall this weekend and caused damage will stay in jail until at least Friday.
Sherif Ramadan, 39, will have a detention hearing to determine whether he will stay jailed or be released with conditions as the case goes through the courts.
He was arrested Monday, after workers found him in the building. The full extent of damage has not been released.
Ramadan has at least a dozen outstanding cases in the city, but police released him on summonses for the other charges, including allegedly stealing a car in August.
The victim in that case had parked on the first block of Morris Avenue overnight Aug. 17, as he went into the Tropicana to gamble. When he returned early the next day, his car was gone and there was glass on the ground, according to the affidavit of probable cause obtained by BreakingAC.
It was found Sept. 4, in the beach block of New Jersey Avenue, with the passenger side window missing and a broken steering column, the affidavit states.
A receipt from the Wawa in Mt. Ephraim, Camden County, led to a Visa card in Ramadan's name. The store's manager gave police video from the transaction that matched a mugshot of Ramadan taken the day before the vehicle was recovered, according to the affidavit. he was even wearing the same camouflage T-shirt.
He was charged with third-degree theft by unlawful taking and released on a summons.
Ramadan was jailed less than two weeks later on a bench warrant out of Atlantic County Central Municipal Court for an apparent failure to appear in an earlier case. He was released Thursday.
Now he is back in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting his detention hearing.
He appeared in court via video briefly Tuesday, where he kept trying to make a statement. Judge Joseph Levin warned him not to talk about the case and explained that, since the state had moved to detain him, the judge had no power to release him before then.
Information released by the Mayor's Office along with comments from Councilman George Tibbitt indicated Ramadan is homeless. His charges from last month list him as living in the first block of South Elberon Avenue.
