Atlantic City woman arrested with gun on way to hospital with shooting victim

  • News

An Atlantic City woman woman on her way to the hospital with a shooting victim was arrested after police found a loaded handgun in the vehicle.

A 17-year-old boy was later arrested as part of the investigation into the weapon, police said.

A ShotSpotter notification of 18 rounds fired at 8:42 p.m. Saturday brought police to the 700 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to the affidavit obtained by BreakingAC.

As police were responding, they saw an SUV speeding from the area, Lt. Kevin Fair said.

Officers Anthony Nastasi and Tyman Gordy stopped the vehicle at Ohio and Atlantic avenues to find the 32-year-old driver from Galloway Township had a gunshot wound to the abdomen and the vehicle showed evidence of gunfire, according to the report.

The officers carried the victim into AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus for treatment of the injury, which was not considered life-threatening.

The officers also found a loaded handgun inside the vehicle. It does not have a serial number, making it a so-called "ghost gun," because of the difficulty in tracking it.

Alicia Gilliard, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken into custody.

The teen was arrested later.

No arrests have been announced for the shooting itself.

Gilliard, 36, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a ghost gun and obstruction. She is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility awaiting a detention hearing.

The teen is in the Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and obstruction.

Gilliard was previously charged on drug and weapons offenses as part of a multi-agency raid in March 2021. She was indicted that September.

But this past June, the indictment was dismissed after her co-defendant, Scarlett Malita, pleaded guilty and cleared Gilliard of any wrongdoing, BreakingAC has confirmed.
