A Mays Landing man is accused of stealing about $39,000 from families who thought they were buying headstones for their loved ones.
Jiolio "Joe" Cincotti, 71, is accused of deceiving more than 24 victims between October 2020 and October 2023.
Cincotti claimed to own Atlantic Memorials in Mays Landing.
He accepted payment for headstones from family members of deceased victims, but never delivered headstones or returned the money, according to the charges.
The victims reported him to Hamilton Township police between Oct. 30, 2023, and Jan. 30.
The total theft at time the ATlantic County Prosecutor's Office released the information, the alleged theft was about $39,000.
He has a prior conviction on a shoplifting charge from 2020 in Egg Harbor Township, court records show. It appears the case was handled at the municipal level and he paid $538 as a result.
Cincotti is free on summonses.
