An Atlantic City man was arrested this week for shooting at a man earlier this month.Darren Smiley, 19, allegedly chased a man firing at the intended victim as he fled in the 1300 block of Adriatic Avenue, Sgt. Kevin Fair said.The ShotSpotter audio gunshot-detection system alerted police about 4 p.m. April 17.
No one was struck.Police did not previously release anything about the incident.A resident reported seeing a car driving erratically while fleeing the area, and told police a gun was thrown out the window, according to the report.The handgun was recovered in the 600 block of N. North Carolina Avenue, Fair said.Sgt. James Herbert located the fleeing vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver sped off, leading to a chase in Pleasantville, according to the report. Herbert stopped the chase due to danger to the public, Fair said.
The vehicle was found in the 600 block of White Horse Pike in Absecon, with no one inside.
An investigation by detectives led to criminal charges being filed against Smiley.
Herbert and Detective Anthony Abrams arrested Smiley in the 1100 block of City Avenue on Tuesday, Fair said.He is in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and eluding.
