A New York man was sentenced to 42 years in prison in the brutal 2018 rape of a casino housekeeper.
The victim was pushed into a Bally’s Hotel and Casino hotel room at about 11:30 a.m. Feb. 11, 2018. The woman was then sexually and physically assaulted. An investigation identified Carlton as her attacker. He was arrested after a brief chase.
It took a jury just more than three hours to convict him during a trial this past April.
The victim spoke at sentencing, telling the court how much pain the attack caused her and asking for a lengthy sentence.
“The strength of the victim in this case was extraordinary,” Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer told the judge. “Ordinarily the defendant would face 10 to 20 years in state prison for aggravated sexual assault.
“However, given the defendant’s criminal history and the particularly egregious nature of this sexual assault, we asked the court to impose an extended term of sentence to secure proper justice for our victim and to protect the public from future harm from this individual,” he added. “We are grateful Judge (Pam) D’Arcy viewed the facts and circumstances of this case similarly and imposed this extended term.”
Carlton must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence. With time served, that means he would be eligible for parole when he’s about 70 years old.
Carlton would then be subject to Megan’s Law, with parole supervision for life.
Additionally, Carlton will be subject to Megan’s Law, Parole Supervision for Life, and to have no contact with the victim pursuant to a sex offender restraining order.
Both the victim and her family were present at sentencing. The victim told the Court and the defendant how much pain his actions have caused her and her family. She asked the Court to impose a lengthy sentence.
The case was investigated by the Atlantic City Police Department with the assistance of Bally’s security and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.
